After one hunderd years of solitude and cronicle of a death foretold this is my third favorite book of Marquez. And i got the same taste in this book as after one hunders years of solitude. Also this book is mysterious as much as cronicle of a death foretold. Therefore it is actuall difficult to unhand this book. It is impressive that this book is the first book of marquez. Such a talent !Oh, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I guess it wasnt third time lucky for us. Having really liked the previous two novels I read by Marquez (Chronicle of a Death Foretold and The Story of a Shipewrecked Sailor), Leaf Storm was kind of a major letdown.Marquezs gorgeous writing style was out in force throughout the novel, which means that it is by no means a total failure; his ability to bring places to life is incredible and there is a specific passage about the movement of time that is just beautiful.
This book is amazing. I pictured the title - "La hojarasca" - like a small "cyclone", a wind turbulence that rotates the leaves and powerfully spins around as it moves away. The novella is spinning around the reader which sees only fragments of the story that has to be put together as it unravells in an non-liniar way, from the point of view of three different generations. It may me think of pulp fiction in a way.
This is a novella of 100 pages and six short stories by the master. The novella of the title is a strange story, essentially a fantasy. A family in a small town in Colombia has taken in two people, a young Indian woman and a man who supposedly used to be a doctor. They dont even learn his name for five years. One novella and the rest of them pretty short stories. They were apparently written well before One Hundred Years, but the foundation is there to be seen. Macondo is introduced with the train and the banana company. There is Col. For me this was a definite 5 star rating.Just really enjoyed this book from the first page.The atmosphere at the start of the book was incredibleand will stay with me for a while.Also the characters were excellent especially the doctor.What a strange guy!
