World War II gets all the attention. This book is a gentle reminder that before the Hollywood portrayal of The Good War in all its glory and Great American Heroes that spawned The Greatest Generation, there was another Great War, equally important in American history. Considering the one-hundred year anniversary of WWI this is the perfect opportunity to remind ourselves that human terrorism is always with us.Here is the story of two young boys growing up in rural Idaho who would go on to fight in the War to End All Wars. One would experience the joy of learning to pilot an airplane as a World War I flying ace. The other would suffer the horror of the trenches. Will either survive and see their families again? Read this book and find out. It is hard not to get caught up in the drama Jerry Borrowman creates in his excellent account of what life was like in America pre-WWII.
The best way to study history is to read historical fiction. When a book like this comes along you can't easily put it down. Read it and pass it on.

Set during the Great War, or World War 1, this book really delves into some of the raw emotions and experiences of the men who served in the various military branches during the course of the war. It was eye opening, deep and moving. Dan and Trevor (and the rest of the gang) are incredibly like-able characters and you get immersed in their stories, feeling with them all the things they feel as they struggle with family issues, learning how to be soldiers, and fighting in the Great War. (AI read this book in 8th grade and can confidently say that this is the only book I've ever cried over; it wasn't necessarily amazing writing, but rather the characters that made it one of my favorite books of all time (which I guess can be attributed to the writing). Release order is the ranking I'd give for the books in this series.
l liked the book, but after something happened that I didnt like, I stopped reading it for a time. Then I allowed myself to finish it and it got good again.
Why I picked up this book: It was at my mom's house. It's a WWI historical fiction (my grandpa fought in WWI). The main characters are from Pocatello! And I enjoyed the authors other books that he co-wrote. Why it wasn't as good as it could have been: The characters did not seem realistic. Their vocabulary was better than mine and I'm not a 15 year old farm boy from 1911 Pocatello. The author keep talking about how good of friends the boys were but it just wasn't as believable because he didn't
I didn't feel like the story was written wonderfully and the way that time jumped from being a Teacher to going to college and barely mentioning significant things that happened (like Dan's mother dying) was strange to me. All of that said I am not super critical when it comes to books - I enjoyed the story, I like history and enjoyed the historical aspect of the book and so I all in all liked it. I am going to read the follow on books so that says something as well I suppose.
LDS/ Religious historical fiction during WW1. For me, this wasn't as good as the Children of the Promise series, but I did enjoy the characters very much
